Switching from AppleWorks April 29, 2009 E.K. 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
As a home user, I delayed getting FileMaker Pro for Mac for a long time due to the price, continuing to use old AppleWorks databases. I couldn't switch to Bento because it's Leopard only (I need to run it on a Tiger machine as well). Also, if you transfer between computers, I believe you have to export/import Bento files vs simply transfer the file as is the case with FMPro.
So with some trepidation, I paid the big bucks (for me) for FileMaker Pro plus the "Missing Manual," and I couldn't be happier. I would've given it 5 stars except for a tiny bug that I found a work around for. For those switching from AppleWorks, don't worry - it's confusing for a week or so and then you'll love it.
Good performance and internal reliability but very quirky September 12, 2009 J. Boutilier (Thornton, CO United States) 2 out of 4 found this review helpful
I bought Filemaker Pro 10 expecting a fast, mature, reliable, easy to use mainstream RDBMS solution for MAC.
It did turn out to be fast and reliable as a stand-alone program. But its sure not mainstream (offering no native SQL), its user interface is primitive and very un-mac like. It includes some ODBC/JDBC drivers to help integrating third party tools, but they are poorly written buggy, and offer limited functionality so even external SQL access is less than optimal.
Also on the MAC side, some features (like importing from other data sources) require Rosette to be running. Thats not really acceptable for a product thats supposed to be this mature given how long intel MAC's have been around.
If you don't have experience with other databases, and want a fast, powerful, reliable desktop DB for the MAC you might consider it. But there are far better choices on the PC side, and if you ever expect to use more traditional SQL based databases I would not invest the significant effort and time required to learn Filemaker's proprietary system.

this product is ok although for CRM applications online services will be cheaper and faster to set up
No Phone Dial on Mac August 24, 2009 Tom Durbin (Grass Valley, CA United States) 2 out of 6 found this review helpful
Filemaker is an excellent and very useful program. However, for Mac users who want full flexibility and efficiency it has one huge drawback. In Windows Filemaker you can create a customer/friends database from which you can create and use a button to dial the phone at a single click. This feature is inexplicably not available for Mac users and Filemaker support insists that it will never be. For those businesses doing small telemarketing operations this is a deal-breaker.
The only choice if you have a Mac May 2, 2009 T. Maher 10 out of 20 found this review helpful
If you own a Mac, this is your only option unless you want to go through the hassle of installing XP and then Access or Paradox - which are far superior to File Maker. The documentation (help files) are not very helpful at all. They seem to be focused on scripts and not on some very basic things (such as adding records in portal view, etc.). There is too much emphasis on the wow factor and not enough on the basics. Not everyone who owns a Mac is a high-end user, developer, etc.
