Excellent Photo Printer At A Reasonable Price December 21, 2008 Jeffrey A. Veyera (Matthews, NC United States) Epson really has photo printers down to a science at this point. Install and setup is quite easy. The printer takes up a bit more real estate than we've come to expect single-purpose printers to do these days but this is more than made up for by the prints which are comparable to what you get processing through a retail store.
A very nice photo printer at a reasonable price. Great for the amateur photographer.
Love Epson Stylus Photo 1400 December 19, 2009 Darnell A. Hazel (Waldorf, MD USA) This printer is fast good quality photo prints love the large paper size. I would recommend.
Great prints but high ink usage June 28, 2009 Pam Collins White (Hope, ME United States) 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
I have used Epson Printers for years , and have had great success in my photo business using the 1270 and 1280 printers. They are consumer printers but have stood up well to the heavy usage that I subject them to, often running prints straight for days at a time. Now that the 1280 is out of production I decided to move to the 1400 for printing my smaller prints.
The prints are slightly better than those off the 1280 and the Epson interface is easy to understand...unlike my Canon IPF 5000. But, after I did a ink usage test I was very disappointed. The ink usage cost for the 1400 is 3 times what it was on the older 1280. One would have thought that the single color cartridge ink costs for the 1280 would be higher than the individual carts costs for the newer printer but not so. Epson continues to sell a great printer at a moderate cost only to rob the customer with the price of their ink.
Why the Epson 1400 only gets 3 stars... December 19, 2009 K. Ronald Calef (Penn Valley, CA USA) 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
We own three of these printers, as our sports action photography business prints a lot of 8X10s. We would be considered a fairly high volume user. The 1400 is a workhorse for us and is truly excellent for printing non-borderless prints. Where the printer lacks is in the borderless category. There is something about the borderless printing process that causes the print heads to clog up and the output photos to smear after fairly short borderless runs. Our technician concurs that this is a common problem - one he sees frequently. Every year we have one event that requires a borderless run, and following that event we have to take the printer in for service - hence the need for three (two for standard operational printing and one in service for borderless & backup. Fortunately 90% of our prints are non-borderless.
Furthermore, the 1400 printer we recently purchased through Amazon printed about 150 photos and then the paper feed mechanism failed. This happened after less than three weeks of light service. Apparently this paper feed mechanism design flaw is a problem well-known among the repair folks. After a lengthy and tedious conversation with the Epson Warranty people they agreed to replace the 1400 at no cost to us.
If you are within warranty, Epson will replace, but only if you can convince them that the problem is genuine and not 'operator error'. That "convincing process' took me the better part of 30 plus minutes of conversation with the Epson folks. Do not expect Amazon or their reseller to stand behind the product, vis a vis replacing a faulty product - you will be referred to Epson so quickly it will make your head spin.
Overall, I am pleased with the 1400, and it is a printer we use every day in our business; however, the borderless and feed mechanism problems prevent me for rating it higher than three stars - I'd give it 2.5 stars if that were a choice. If you are printing primarily borderless, I'd suggest you look elsewhere.
High quality prints but irritatingly inaccurate in brightness March 15, 2009 nigelfj (Lexington, MA) 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Given the high cost of inks and my limited time, I would like to be able to get the print right the first time. Unfortunately, while the color accuracy is generally very good with the Epson Stylus 1400 (I'm using a color calibrated monitor and soft proof in Capture NX2), the brightness/contrast is always way off - requiring several prints to get even close to what you were trying to do. Hopefully, this will be corrected via the printer driver at some point.
